Connection

Q01: The complying device I want to connect the ASD-R1 to has two inputs: LINE 1 and LINE 2. Which one should I use?

A01: Connect the ASD-R1 with the audio cable to LINE 2 (TAPE).

Q02: Can the ASD-1R be connected to non-DENON products?

A02: Yes, but they cannot be connected to the ASD-1R's control port, which means that the product's remote controller cannot be used to control the iPod. Connect the ASD-1R's AUDIO OUT and/or S-VIDEO OUT to the product's AUDIO IN and/or S-VIDEO IN ports, and you will be able to enjoy audio or video by directly controlling the iPod mounted on the ASD-1R.
Be sure to plug in the AC adapter for this setup.

Q03: Which iPod models can be connected to the ASD-1R?

A03: 1) iPod video 2) iPod photo 3) iPod nano 4) iPod mini 5) 4G iPod: Click Wheel model equipped with Dock Connector 6) 3G iPod: Touch Wheel model equipped with Dock Connector When connecting the iPod to the ASD-1R, you will need to use the supplied adapter that matches the iPod you are connecting. However, if you are connecting a 3G iPod, you will need to use the Apple iPod Universal Dock adapter (3 pack), separately available from Apple Computer. If you are connecting an iPod nano, 5G iPod (video), or later model iPod, you will need to use the Dock adapter supplied with the iPod.

Q04: What kinds of devices can the ASD-1R be connected to?

A04: 1. To a device equipped with a dedicated Dock Control port. Check the list of supported devices. If your device is in this list, the iPod can be controlled from the main unit or from the remote control unit supplied with the device. Information from the iPod is displayed on the screen or on the screen of the connected device, and the iPod can be operated while viewing this information. Some operations may not be possible depending on the iPod model. 2. To a system device equipped with a system connector. Check the list of supported devices. If your device is in this list, the basic operations of the iPod can be controlled from the supplied remote control unit. Some operations may not be possible depending on the iPod model. Also, some operations may not work correctly with certain combinations.

Q05: Do I need to make any settings when connecting the ASD-1R? (Connection to a system device equipped with a dedicated Dock Control port)

A05: Set the Mode Select switch at the bottom of the ASD-1R to "Dock Control". When setting the switch, be sure that the ASD-1R's power supply is disconnected. Depending on the device being connected, it may be necessary to set the input function (where the ASD-1R is connected) so that it recognizes the ASD-1R. For details, check the operation manual that came with your device.

Q06: Do I need to use a special cable when connecting the ASD-1R? (Connection to a system device equipped with a dedicated Dock Control port)

A06: Use the cable that came with the ASD-1R.

Q07: I have a Denon system device. Can I connect the ASD-1R to it? (Connection to a system device equipped with a dedicated System Connector port)

A07: Check the list of supported devices. If your device is in this list, operation is possible from the supplied remote control unit. Note: When connecting this way, the ASD-1R replaces the cassette deck or CD-R player in the system, and control is directed to the iPod instead. Since the iPod is controlled through the TAPE or CD-R port of your system, these functions cannot be used for the iPod if the cassette deck or CD-R player is connected at the same time. These functions can be used if either the TAPE port or CD-R port is available. (CD-R functions may not be available depending on the device. For details, check the list of supported devices.)

Q08: A cassette deck is already connected to the device. How should I connect the ASD-1R so that I can operate the iPod? (Connected to a system) (Connection to a system device equipped with a System Connector)

A08:
[Case 1] If your system devices as CD-R functions, you can operate the iPod using those functions.
[Case 2] If your system does not have a CD-R port, you cannot use the cassette deck and the ASD-1R at the same time. The TAPE functions are the only ones that can be used; no other functions are available.

Q09:
1) A cassette deck is already connected to the device. How should I connect the ASD-1R so that I can operate the iPod? (Connected to a non-Denon product, or not connected to a system)(Connection to a system device equipped with a System Connector)
2) Do I need to make any settings when connecting the ASD-1R?
3) Do I need a special cable when connecting the ASD-1R?

A09:
1) Operation is possible by connecting the cassette deck to the input/output functions of a port other than TAPE and then connecting the ASD-1R to TAPE.
2) Set the Mode Select switch at the bottom of the ASD-1R to match the input functions of the connected device.
When setting the switch, be sure that the ASD-1R's power supply is disconnected.
3) You must use the system cable that came with the ASD-1R.

Operation

Q1: Is it possible to operate the ASD-R1 from the iPod? (I want to do things like select the artist, album, or track, and start playback.)

Case 1: When connected to a device with a Dock Control port
A1: Yes, the device can be operated from the iPod when the device is in Remote mode. If the device is currently in Browse mode, please switch it to Remote mode. For instructions on how to switch the mode, please check the user guide for that device.

Case 2: When connected to a device with a System Connector port
A1': Yes, the device can be operated from the iPod.

Q2: What is Browse mode, and what is Remote mode?
(Connection to a system device equipped with a dedicated Dock Control port)

A2:
Browse mode:
In Browse mode, you can operate the iPod and enjoy music while viewing information from the iPod on the display screen or the display section of the connected device. (Functions related to video images on the iPod cannot be operated. Also, functions cannot be operated directly from the iPod.) Depending on the iPod model or the version of software, some functions may not work correctly.

Remote mode:
In Remote mode, you can operate the iPod while viewing the iPod's display screen. To operate the Slideshow or video functions, set the device to Remote mode. Direct operation from the iPod is also possible. Depending on the iPod model or the version of software, some functions may not work correct

Q3: How do I set the device to Browse mode or Remote mode?
(Connection to a system device equipped with a dedicated Dock Control port)

A3: Operation varies according to the device. For details, check the operation manual that came with the device.

Q4: Can I control the iPod through the system when I connect the ASD-1R to a current Denon system device?
(Connection to a system device equipped with a System Connector port)

A4: Since the ASD-1R replaces the cassette deck or CD-R player in the system and control is directed to the iPod instead in this type of connection, the system functions available through the TAPE or CD-R port are also available to the ASD-1R.
However, Denon has confirmed system operation only with system devices specified by Denon. You should therefore be aware that Denon does not guarantee the operation of all system functions for the particular system you want to connect the ASD-1R to.
Also, some functions may not work correctly depending on the iPod model, version of software, or iPod settings (when in a video-related mode). There are limitations especially with G3 iPods.
Notes of Caution:
When using the ASD-1R, always be sure that the ASD-1R's power is ON (i.e., the AC adapter is connected to the AC input jack on the ASD-1R and is plugged into a power outlet). If the ASD-1R's power is OFF, other system functions may not work correctly.

Auto Power ON: When system power is in Standby mode, pressing the Play (>) button for TAPE or CD-R on the remote control unit will turn on power to the iPod and amp, and the iPod will start playing. Power to the amp will not turn on when play is started directly from the iPod.

Auto Functions: If a device other than the cassette deck or CD-R is currently playing, pressing the Play (>) button for TAPE or CD-R on the remote control unit will switch the amp's function to TAPE or CD-R, and the iPod will start playing.
If the Play button for another device is pressed while the iPod is playing, the iPod will switch to Pause mode. (This Pause function does not work with 3G iPods.)

Timer: The Timer function can be set to work at a specified time. 3G iPods, however, do not switch to Pause mode when the Timer (including the Sleep Timer) sends an OFF command; it simply continues to play. This feature is not linked to the iPod's Alarm or Sleep Timer functions.

Recording: Recording functions such as synchronized recording or Synchro Record do not work.

Q5: Can I operate slideshows of video images or other video functions?
(Connection to a system device equipped with a System Connector)

A5: The video functions of iPods with these functions cannot be operated from the remote control unit, but it is possible to operate them directly from the iPod itself.
